Parliament Winter Session Opens With All Party Meet
- All party meeting reviews bills and plans for Parliament Winter Session
- Centre seeks cooperation from opposition for smooth Winter Session
Hyderabad: The Parliament Winter Session will begin on Monday, December 1. Ahead of the opening, an all party meeting was held in New Delhi on Sunday. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju chaired the discussions. They met leaders from several parties to review the agenda and seek cooperation for the smooth conduct of the session.
The Centre asked opposition members to support the passage of bills listed for the coming days. It also appealed for calm debate and order in the House. Union ministers JP Nadda, Arjun Ram Meghwal, L. Murugan and Anupriya Patel joined the meeting. Leaders from Congress, TDP, YCP, BRS, Jana Sena, and other parties also attended. These included Jairam Ramesh, Lavu Sri Devaraya, Mithun Reddy, Suresh Reddy, Bala Shourie, Kamal Haasan, Derek O’Brien, Triuchi Shiva, T.R. Balu and Kalyan Banerjee.
The government plans to introduce 10 new bills during the Parliament Winter Session. It will also place four financial amendment bills before the House. Officials said the government will propose a bill to repeal 120 outdated laws. They added that five key bills will relate to Home, Atomic Energy, Education and Roads. One of them aims to create a law for the efficient use of atomic energy. Another seeks to ensure transparent land acquisition to speed up National Highway works.
A bill to establish the Higher Education Commission of India will also come up. The government said this Commission will work to set high standards in scientific and technological institutions, the research sector and higher education. Two other bills introduced in the monsoon session and sent to Parliament Select Committees have been prepared for approval in the upcoming session.
The Parliament Winter Session will continue from December 1 to 19. Party leaders have directed their members on strategy for the weeks ahead. This session will be one of the shortest since 2014, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office. Meanwhile, parties in the INDIA alliance aim to corner the government on issues such as the Bihar Assembly election results, EVMs, SIR, and the Centre’s approach to Maoist related matters.
