Delhi/Hyderabad, jan 23 (Maxim News): The Central Government’s directorate General of Health Services has directed that only pharmacists in medical shops can dispense antibiotics to patients on the prescription of a registered doctor.
The Central government warns that pharmacists are responsible for strict implementation of the Drug and Cosmetics Act, 1945 (relating to Schedule H and H1 drugs).

It may be recalled that in the recent raids on the medical shops and godown in Telangana, it was found that Chemist drug traders are selling drugs haphazardly. This causes side effects. Medical shops are running without qualified pharmacists.

It is illegally stored in Warehouses and supplied to medical shops. shopkeepers are also selling them without a doctor’s prescription. antidepressants, pain pills, sleeping pills etc. are being given without a doctor’s prescription. Some types of syrups also have some narcotic effect. Drug users are using these syrups instead. These are also available in medical stores. according to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act – 1940 every medical shop should have a registered pharmacist. Only registered candidates who have completed B. Pharmacy, M. Pharmacy, D. Pharmacy will have to operate these medical shops. At the time of giving permission to the medical shops, the drug control authorities will check the presence or absence of the pharmacist. The concerned area inspectors also have to check whether pharmacists are present or not at the time of inspections. Otherwise there is a possibility of issuing a show cause notice.
According to the officials, every medical shop is run under the supervision of a pharmacist according to the inspectors. However, in the raids conducted on Monday, there were no pharmacists in many places. (Maxim News)
