Accra/Hyderabad, July 3 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian award, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, in recognition of his distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership. The award was presented by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama during Modi’s official visit to the country on Wednesday.

Expressing gratitude on social media, Prime Minister Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter)

“Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana.’ I humbly accept this award on behalf of the 140 crore Indians.”

In his acceptance remarks, Modi dedicated the honour to the aspirations of youth, the cultural richness of both nations, and their shared commitment to democratic values.

“This honour is not just a recognition, it is a responsibility — to continue building stronger bonds between India and Ghana,” he said.

Modi emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to partnering with Ghana in development, technology, and education, stating, “India will always stand with the people of Ghana as a trusted friend and development partner.”

A Prestigious Honour Shared by Global Icons

The Order of the Star of Ghana has previously been awarded to several prominent global figures, including:

  • Queen Elizabeth II
  • Nelson Mandela (Former South African President)
  • Kofi Annan (Former UN Secretary-General)
  • King Charles III (then Prince of Wales)
  • King Mohammed VI of Morocco
  • Giorgio Napolitano (Former Italian President)

Modi now joins this prestigious list, marking a historic milestone in India-Ghana relations.

Modi’s visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades — also saw wide-ranging talks with President Mahama. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the award as a “testament to the deep and long-standing friendship” between the two nations. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X.

“A historic State visit that brings new energy to India-Ghana relations. The honour bestowed on PM Modi reflects our growing global stature and mutual respect.”

Prime Minister Modi is currently on a five-nation tour, with Ghana as his first stop, aimed at bolstering India’s diplomatic and economic engagement across Africa and beyond.
