Hyderabad, Dec 17 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed the Joint Session of Ethiopia’s Parliament, highlighting the shared symbolism of the “Motherland” in India and Ethiopia. He drew parallels between India’s national song ‘Vande Mataram’ and Ethiopia’s national anthem, ‘March Forward, Dear Mother Ethiopia,’ noting that both refer to their land as “Mother,” which reflects a common perspective across nations.

PM Modi said, “With the call of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas’, which means together with everyone’s growth, trust and effort, our emotions with our motherland, also reflect our shared perspective.” He added that both national compositions inspire citizens to take pride in heritage, culture, and beauty, and encourage the protection of the motherland.

The Prime Minister highlighted Ethiopia’s historical significance, pointing out that science has traced some of the earliest human footprints in the country. “When the world speaks of ‘Lucy of Dinkinesh’, they are not speaking only of fossils but of a beginning — that belongs to all of us, whether we live in Addis Ababa or Ayodhya. In India, we say ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, which means ‘The world is one family’. It reminds us that beyond politics, borders and differences, we share a common origin. If our beginning was shared, then our destiny must also be shared,” he said.

PM Modi also expressed admiration for Ethiopia’s natural and cultural heritage. “It is a moment of great privilege to stand before you today. It is wonderful to be here in Ethiopia, the land of lions. I feel very much at home because my home state, Gujarat in India, is also home to lions,” he stated. He emphasised Ethiopia’s blend of ancient wisdom and modern aspirations as the true strength of the nation.

Earlier in the session, PM Modi received Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia.’ He said, “I accept this award with folded hands, humility on behalf of the people of India.” He concluded by praising Ethiopia as one of the oldest civilisations, where history is alive in mountains, valleys, and the hearts of its people, and urged closer bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
