Tokyo, June 25: Powerful earthquakes struck Japan and Venezuela on Thursday, disrupting transport services and raising concerns over damage and casualties in both countries. Authorities in Japan ruled out a tsunami threat, while emergency response efforts intensified in Venezuela.
In Japan, the earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Iwate Prefecture at around 7:30 am local time. The preliminary magnitude was reported at 6.9 and the quake occurred at a depth of about 50 kilometres.
Japan and Venezuela Earthquake Trigger Emergency Response
The tremor caused strong shaking across northeastern Japan, including Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and nearby regions. Authorities reported no tsunami warning and no immediate irregularities at nuclear facilities. Rail services, including parts of the Tohoku Shinkansen network, were temporarily suspended for safety inspections.
Japanese authorities activated emergency monitoring systems and advised residents to remain alert for aftershocks. Some precautionary school closures and transport checks were also reported.
Meanwhile, Venezuela experienced two powerful earthquakes in quick succession near the coastal area west of Caracas. Reports indicated severe shaking, structural damage and emergency operations across affected regions.
According to available reports, the stronger earthquake measured 7.5 magnitude and followed another major tremor within about a minute. Authorities warned that the shallow depth could increase the impact on buildings and infrastructure.
Emergency assessments and rescue operations remain underway as officials continue to evaluate the extent of damage and casualties.
