President’s Rule Manipur has been revoked, clearing the way for the formation of a BJP government in the state. President Droupadi Murmu issued an order to this effect on Wednesday. The decision brings an end to central rule and restores the process of elected governance in Manipur. The order takes effect immediately from February 4, 2026.

The President stated that he is rescinding the orders issued on February 13, 2025, which imposed President’s Rule in Manipur. He exercised powers vested under Clause (2) of Article 356 of the Constitution. Therefore, the earlier proclamation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. This move formally opens the path for a new state government to take charge.

As part of this process, BJP MLAs met on Tuesday and unanimously elected Yumunam Khemchand Singh as the leader of the state legislature party. Therefore, preparations are now underway for his swearing in as the new Chief Minister of Manipur. Khemchand Singh is 62 years old and is a senior leader in state politics.

Khemchand Singh has emerged as a key BJP figure in Manipur. He won the 2017 and 2022 assembly elections from the Sinjami constituency in Imphal West. Later, he served as the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly from March 2017 to March 2022. After the BJP secured a majority in the 2022 elections, the party appointed him as a cabinet minister for the second time in the Biren Singh government.
