Private Colleges in Telangana To Shut Down From November 3 Over Fee Dues
Hyderabad: Irked by the State government’s prolonged delay in releasing pending fee reimbursement funds, managements of private professional colleges—including engineering and pharmacy institutions—have announced that they will close their campuses from November 3.
A formal notice of closure will be served to the government on October 22, according to the Federation of Associations of Telangana Higher Institutions (FATHI), which took this decision during its core committee meeting held on Sunday.
FATHI said the decision came after the government failed to release ₹300 crore in pending fee dues as assured before the Diwali festival. Earlier, the association had postponed its protest—originally planned for October 13—to October 23, following assurances from officials that payments would be cleared before the festival.
However, the government has reportedly released only ₹376 crore out of the promised ₹1,200 crore, leaving colleges in severe financial distress.
“For the past several days, we have been running from pillar to post, meeting Ministers and officials seeking release of our dues. The only response we receive is that the government has no funds and that we must wait two to three more months. Colleges have been waiting for nearly four years—how can they survive any longer?” said a college management representative.

FATHI has demanded immediate release of ₹900 crore by November 1, and a clear timeline for disbursal of the remaining ₹8,800 crore in fee reimbursement arrears and future payments.
In the lead-up to the closure, the federation has planned a series of consultations—meeting with professional accredited colleges associations on October 24, and student organisations on October 25. A general body meeting is scheduled for October 26, followed by discussions with all political parties on November 1.
