Same People Who Criticised GST As Gabbar Singh Tax Is Now Taking Credit For GST 2.0: Nirmala Sitharaman
Delhi/Hyderabad. Sept 5 (Maxim News): The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman has taken a dig at the Congress party and its top leader Rahul Gandhi, who are claiming that the credit for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) 2.0 is theirs. She said that the same people who had previously criticised GST as the Gabbar singh Tax are now taking credit for GST 2.0.
She said that opposition leaders, who had earlier described the Goods and Services Tax as Gabbar singh Tax, are now taking credit for the changes in the same tax system. “GST 2.0 is a decision taken for the people and businesses. It is not a response to political criticism. But it seems surprising that those who had earlier called it “Gabbar singh Tax are now claiming it as their victory,” Nirmala Sitharaman said at an event in Delhi. Then why was the Congress party unable to implement it during its rule? She demanded. She said that the Congress party thought it was impossible to implement GST during its rule, but the Modi government successfully implemented it and is now also bringing in the second phase of reforms.
Simplification of tax slabs, 5% and 18% main slabs, 40% sin tax (on tobacco and luxury goods) are some of the key changes in GST 2.0 However, since the implementation of GST in 2017, the opposition parties have been criticizing the NDA government, using it as a weapon.
Congress leaders, reacting to GST 2.0, said that it is a follow-up to the 18% GSt cap suggested by Rahul Gandhi in 2016. They recalled their role in the steps taken in GST 2.0 with the intention of benefiting the common consumers.
Meanwhile, the first person to call GST as Gabbar Singh Tax was Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi. he made this comment at an election rally in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in october 2017, GSt has a maximum tax of 28%, there are three return forms. It is putting a burden on the people. It is like Gabbar Singh Tax, he added.
He made the above comment, implying that the government was forcibly collecting money from the people, like the villain Gabbar Singh in the Bollywood cult classic Sholay. The opposition parties at the time also alleged that the implementation of GSt was causing hardship to small traders and the middle3 class due to multiple tax slabs and complicated compliance procedures.
