Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’ Dies After 20 Years In Coma At Age 36

Riyadh, July 20, 2025Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, affectionately known as Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’, has passed away at the age of 36 after spending nearly two decades in a coma following a tragic car accident in 2005. His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, confirmed the news on social media, writing:

“With hearts full of faith in Allah’s decree and destiny, and with profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn our beloved son Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him.”

Funeral prayers are scheduled to be held on Sunday after Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, the family announced.

A Two-Decade Medical Ordeal

In 2005, at the age of 15, Prince Al-Waleed suffered a severe brain hemorrhage after a car accident in London. He was flown back to Saudi Arabia and admitted to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained in a vegetative state for nearly 20 years.

Despite extensive international medical consultations, including with specialists from the United States and Spain, the prince never regained full consciousness. For two decades, he was dependent on a ventilator and life support, with occasional signs of reflex movement sparking hope among his family and supporters.

A Symbol of Hope and Devotion

Prince Khaled bin Talal, known for his strong stance on preserving life, refused to withdraw life support, even when advised otherwise. His unwavering presence at his son’s bedside over the years resonated deeply with many, turning the “Sleeping Prince” into a symbol of faith, love, and endurance.

Born in April 1990, Prince Al-Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled, who is the brother of billionaire investor Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. The young prince was known for his vibrant personality and athletic abilities before the accident altered the course of his life.
