SC Will Hear Gandhi’s Plea In The Defamation Case On 4 Aug

Delhi/Hyderabad, July 21 (Maxim News): The Supreme Court has decided to hear the appeal filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case on August 4.

It may be recalled that the Surat Court declared Rahul Gandhi guilty of making inappropriate comments on Prime Minister Modi’s surname and he went to the Gujarat High Court challenging it.  But here too, he got hit. He approached the Supreme Court after the Gujarat High Court refused to stay the order of the  Surat Court.

A bench comprising Justice Gavai and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra ordered the registry to issue notices to the Gujarat government, the respondent Purnesh Modi and other concerned persons on whether Rahul’s conviction can be quashed.  Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared on behalf of Rahul Gandhi said that since the monsoon session of Parliament was going on. he requested a speedy hearing of his client’s appeal.

The Election Commission may announce bye-elections to the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala at any moment.  Singhvi requested the court on July 15, seeking to hear his client’s appeal as soon as possible.  Singhvi stated that as a result of the orders given by the Surat Court and the Gujarat High Court also did not give him any relief,  his client lost the membership of the Lok Sabha and more than 112 days have already passed.  Rahul Gandhi did not get any relief either from the Surat Sessions Court or from the Gujarat High Court.  On March 23, the Surat Court sentenced him to two years in prison but granted bail.  But after he was declared guilty in this case, he went to the Gujarat High Court.  as that Court did not grant a stay, they approached the Supreme Court.  (Maxim News)
