- Congress leader says BRS misled Muslims and failed on promises
- Highlights Congress revival of true minority welfare and educational reforms
Hyderabad, November 5: Senior Congress leader and Advisor to the Telangana Government Mohammed Ali Shabbir has accused the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of betraying Muslims through false promises and neglect over the past decade. At a press conference held at Gandhi Bhavan, Shabbir Ali launched a sharp attack on the BRS leadership, claiming it had no moral authority to speak about minority welfare after ten years of discrimination.
He reminded journalists that in 2014, BRS chief K. Chandrashekar Rao had promised to deliver 12% Muslim reservation within four months of coming to power but failed entirely. “BRS ruled for ten years. Not only did they fail to deliver 12%, but they even tried to remove the existing 4% reservation by neglecting the case in the Supreme Court,” he said. Shabbir accused the previous government of neglecting minority representation, claiming that more than 80% of minority colleges had shut down and that Muslims were excluded from administrative posts across state institutions.
He also said KCR’s actions in Kamareddy showed political opportunism aimed at defeating Muslim leaders rather than representing the people. “If he truly cared for minorities, he should have contested from Gosha Mahal to challenge the BJP,” Shabbir said. He alleged that KCR conspired to remove Muslim and Dalit leaders from positions of influence by engineering defections of legislators, calling it “the real face of BRS leadership.”
Listing Congress initiatives under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Shabbir highlighted the sanction of 2,200 additional engineering seats for minority students, new law and pharmacy colleges, and the Young India Integrated Residential Schools initiative worth Rs 225 crore. “For the first time, minorities are being treated on par with SC, ST, and BC students,” he said, adding that allowances, hostels, and diet charges had been increased significantly. He further pointed out that the Congress had revived Urdu institutions and appointed 500 Urdu teachers across Telangana.

On law and order, Shabbir accused BRS of fuelling communal tensions and backing the BJP in Parliament on key legislations like the Triple Talaq Bill, NRC, and UAPA. He said the Congress government’s scientific caste survey confirmed that Muslims make up 12.58% of Telangana’s population, providing data to defend and expand reservations. “Revanth Reddy believes in equality, not appeasement,” he stressed, asserting that the Congress is working for empowerment through education and justice.
Minister Md Azharuddin, who also addressed the media, expressed confidence that the Congress would win the Jubilee Hills bypoll “with a thumping majority.” He accused the BRS of spreading misleading propaganda to distract the Muslim community from its failures. Shabbir concluded by appealing to voters to support Congress candidate Naveen Yadav, saying the party stood for secularism, dignity, and inclusion.
