Shabbir Ali challenges KTR, accuses BRS of betrayal and fake sympathy
Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader and Advisor to the Telangana Government Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Tuesday launched a strong counterattack on the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), accusing its leadership of betraying the Muslim community and extending covert support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Addressing a large minority meeting at Yousufguda as part of the Jubilee Hills by-election campaign for Congress candidate Naveen Yadav, Shabbir Ali directly challenged BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), saying that KTR’s recent statements expressing sympathy over his not being made a minister were insincere. “KTR has no moral right to speak about me. The same family that worked to end my political career in Kamareddy is now shedding fake sympathy,” he said.
Shabbir recalled that the BRS leadership, led by then Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), deliberately entered the Kamareddy constituency to defeat him. “I challenge KTR – tell me why your father came to Kamareddy to contest against me,” he said amid applause. “I am the same person who fought for 4 per cent Muslim reservation, who gave my youth, blood, and sweat for it. KCR’s only objective was to silence the voice that fought for justice for minorities,” he said.
He explained that due to the circumstances created by KCR’s sudden entry into Kamareddy, the Congress high command decided to shift him to Nizamabad Urban, while Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy contested from Kamareddy. “KCR’s political manoeuvre was intended to block my return to the Assembly, but it only exposed his insecurity and fear of a strong Congress challenge,” Shabbir said.
He also accused KCR of plotting earlier to remove him as Leader of Opposition by engineering defections in the Congress Legislative Council. “Despite this shameless record, KTR and other BRS leaders now pretend to sympathise with me and falsely accuse the Congress party. This hypocrisy is both laughable and insulting,” he remarked.
Shabbir alleged that the BRS had no moral ground to talk about secularism after supporting the BJP in Parliament on 14 key bills. “The same BRS that helped BJP in Delhi is now pretending to be secular in Telangana. The choice before us is clear – stand with Congress and Rahul Gandhi or with those who kneel before Modi,” he said.
He reminded the audience that KCR had promised in 2014 to enhance the Muslim reservation from 4 per cent to 12 per cent within four months of forming the government, but failed to deliver even after a decade in power. “Not only did KCR fail to keep his promise, but 80 per cent of minority colleges were also shut down during his rule,” Shabbir said.
Highlighting the Congress’s consistent record, he said the 4 per cent reservation implemented by the Congress had changed thousands of lives, creating more than 22 lakh professionals across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. “Just this year, 1,245 Muslim students got free medical seats under this quota. There is no other state in India where such progress has been made,” he said.
Shabbir credited the Congress for establishing six medical colleges and more than 50 engineering colleges for minorities between 2004 and 2014. He accused KCR of destroying that legacy. “Instead of encouraging education, KCR sent police to close minority colleges. The Congress built institutions; KCR demolished them,” he said.
The meeting was also addressed by TPCC President B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, Ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Ponnam Prabhakar, Md Azharuddin and other senior Congress leaders.Concluding his address, Shabbir Ali reminded that only Congress had fought for education, employment, and dignity for minorities. “Those who once stood with Modi can never stand with Muslims. Congress gave you reservation, colleges, and opportunities – now it is your turn to give Congress your mandate,” he said. (Maxim News)
