Shabbir Ali Slams BJP For Targeting Waqf, Accuses PM Modi Of Misinformation And Corporate Bias

Hyderabad: Congress senior leader and Advisor to Telangana Government Mohammed Ali Shabbir criticized the BJP for turning Waqf into a communal issue ahead of the Delhi elections, accusing the party of misinformation and divisive politics to polarise society.

In a media statement on Monday, Shabbir Ali alleged that the BJP thrived on creating controversies, citing its focus on issues like the Hijab, NRC, CAA, and the Uniform Civil Code during previous elections. With the Delhi Assembly elections approaching, Shabbir Ali alleged that the BJP has now targeted Waqf to stir communal discord.

He called Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statements on Waqf “misleading and deliberate attempts to sow division.” Shabbir Ali countered Modi’s claim that Waqf has no connection to the Constitution by highlighting Articles 25, 26, and 29, which protect religious and charitable endowments. “Waqf is not a new concept or a political creation. It is a centuries-old institution codified under our Constitution to protect religious endowments for public welfare. Modi’s statements show either a lack of understanding or a deliberate attempt to mislead,” Shabbir Ali said.

Refuting another claim by Modi that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar never spoke about Waqf, Shabbir Ali pointed to the Constituent Assembly debates of December 6, 1948. “Dr. Ambedkar acknowledged the importance of Waqf under personal laws and ensured its protection under secular and democratic principles. Modi should do his homework before making such baseless statements,” he remarked.

Shabbir Ali accused the BJP of attempting to dilute the Waqf Act to grab prime properties and transfer them to corporate allies. “The BJP’s agenda is clear – they want to dismantle Waqf properties donated for public welfare and hand them over to profiteers like Adani and Ambani,” he alleged. He stressed that Waqf properties, meant to fund schools, hospitals, and community welfare projects, serve people across religions and are not exclusive to Muslims.

Addressing misconceptions about Waqf, Shabbir Ali clarified that these properties are governed by State Waqf Boards under government supervision, much like Hindu religious institutions governed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act. “If the management of Hindu temples is regulated by government oversight, why is BJP making Waqf a communal issue?” he questioned.

He also highlighted the significance of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2013, which introduced digitalization of records, made encroachments a cognizable offense, and increased transparency. “Why is the BJP now trying to dilute these reforms? Whose interests are they serving?” Shabbir Ali asked.

He accused the BJP of spreading falsehoods that Muslims control Waqf properties. “Waqf properties are legally managed by statutory bodies like State Waqf Boards and the Central Waqf Council, which ensure transparency and protect assets from encroachment or misuse,” he explained.

Shabbir Ali criticized the BJP’s priorities, saying that instead of addressing inflation, unemployment, and farmer distress, they focus on Waqf to polarise society and distract the public from real issues. “The BJP’s divisive politics is evident – they are not interested in solving problems but in creating controversies to serve corporate greed,” he said.

He called for unity to protect Waqf properties, which he described as a legacy of trust and charity serving all communities. “This is not about religion but about protecting public assets. Any attempt to dismantle the Waqf system is an attack on our shared heritage and values,” he asserted. Shabbir Ali reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and assets of all communities, saying, “We stand for unity, fairness, and constitutional principles. BJP’s divisive agenda will not succeed, and we will fight to protect institutions that serve public welfare.” (Maxim News)
