Shaik Abdullah Sohail Demands Withdrawal Of Waqf Amendment Act
Warangal, May 3: Senior BRS leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Saturday demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Act, describing it as a calculated attempt to erode the autonomy of Waqf Boards and seize control of Muslim community assets. He made these remarks while participating in an all-party protest held in Warangal, following a nationwide call given by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).
“This is not merely a legal amendment—it is a direct assault on our constitutional rights, religious institutions, and the community’s welfare structures built over generations,” Sohail said. “Waqf Boards manage properties meant for orphans, the poor, education, and religious services. This Act weakens their authority and invites political interference and encroachment.”

Addressing the gathering, Sohail stressed that the issue transcends politics and has united Muslims across party lines. “Today, I speak not just as a BRS leader, but as a member of the Muslim community. Whether one belongs to BRS, Congress, or the Left, there is unanimity in opposing this unjust law. Every secular-minded citizen is standing with us in this fight,” he said.
He warned that the amendment poses a serious threat to institutions serving marginalised communities. “Thousands of Waqf properties are at risk. If this law is not repealed, it will lead to the loss of land, disruption of services, and deepen the sense of alienation among Muslims,” he said.
Sohail further noted that the BRS party had opposed the Waqf Amendment Act both in Parliament and in public forums. He added that the party would continue to support all democratic forms of protest being organised across the country, especially in Telangana.
Telangana State Haj Committee Chairman Khusro Pasha Biyabani, Deputy Mayor Masood Ahmed and others leaders including representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamiatul Ulema participated in the protest and echoed similar concerns and called the amendment a serious blow to minority rights.
The protest witnessed participation from leaders of Congress, BRS, Left parties, and other secular organisations. Demonstrators carried placards reading “Withdraw Waqf Amendment Act”, “Protect Muslim Institutions”, and “We Stand With AIMPLB”, signalling widespread discontent.
Speakers condemned the Centre for amending the Act without consultation and said it violated Article 26 of the Constitution, which guarantees religious denominations the right to manage their own affairs. (Maxim News)
