Singeetham Srinivasa Rao | Hyderabad, Oct 4: Legendary filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, known for his innovative storytelling and experimental films, has died at the age of 94. He had been undergoing treatment for age related health problems at Kaveri Hospital in Chennai.

His death has left the Telugu, Tamil and Kannada film industries in mourning. Several film personalities and political leaders have expressed condolences, while admirers have been visiting his Chennai residence to pay their last respects.

Singeetham was widely recognised for taking Indian cinema in unconventional directions. He explored diverse genres and storytelling styles, creating films that later became landmarks in Telugu cinema.

Among his best known works are Aditya 369, which explored the concept of time travel, and Bhairava Dweepam, which brought a fresh approach to the folklore and fantasy genre.

His Pushpaka Vimanam became particularly notable for its silent storytelling. The musical comedy featured no spoken dialogue and relied on performances, visuals and music to carry the narrative.

Singeetham Srinivasa Rao remained passionate about filmmaking even in his nineties. At 94, he directed Sing Geetham, a musical fantasy produced by filmmaker Nag Ashwin under the Swapna Cinema banner.

Over his long career, Singeetham worked as a director, screenwriter, producer and music director. He collaborated with legendary actors including Dr Rajkumar and Kamal Haasan across different stages of his career.

His journey in cinema began as an assistant director under legendary filmmaker K. V. Reddy on Mayabazar. He later built a career spanning several decades and became known for his willingness to experiment with form, genre and storytelling.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep grief over Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s death and described it as an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry and Indian cinema.

The Chief Minister remembered Singeetham as a creative filmmaker who gave Telugu cinema new directions by bringing diverse subjects and innovative ideas to the screen.

Revanth Reddy said Singeetham placed experimentation at the centre of his filmmaking and created several memorable films. His distinctive contribution, he said, would remain permanently etched in cinema history.

The Chief Minister also recalled Singeetham’s contribution as a writer and creative thinker who worked with immense passion for cinema. He said the filmmaker’s services would be remembered for generations.

Revanth Reddy prayed for the departed filmmaker’s soul to rest in peace and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Singeetham’s family, admirers and cinema lovers.
