SIR In 22 States And UTs From April: EC

Delhi/Hyderabad, Feb 20 (Maxim News): The pending ‘SIR’ process will be carried out in 17 states and 5 union territories across the country from April.  To this end, the EC wrote a letter to the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of the respective states on Thursday.  The SIR process will be carried out in key states like Telangana, AP, Maharashtra, karnataka, haryana, Punjab, Odishna, Uttarakhand and Delhi.  The Election Commission has ordered to complete the work related to this as soon as possible.

It said that the current voters should be mapped in the voter list of 2002-2004, which was last conducted by SIR, it suggested that booth-level officials should be trained on this.  The SIR process was completed in Bihar before the assembly election last year.

As part of the second phase, it is being conducted in 12 states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh in october 2025.  It is currently ongoing.  Meanwhile, the first phase of the census will begin from April 1 this year.  Usually, government teachers are used for both the census and the SIR process.  In this context the EC intends to conduct the two processes in phases to avoid burdening them.  (Maxim News)
