The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital global shipping route. Therefore, any instability there raises concerns about energy supplies and regional security. Trump said he hoped allies would deploy naval forces to keep the passage secure and operational during the ongoing conflict.

Iran, however, issued warnings to civilians near certain UAE ports. The call marked the first time Tehran openly threatened non US assets belonging to a neighboring country during the conflict. Iranian authorities alleged that the United States used facilities in the UAE to launch strikes against Kharg Island, which hosts the main terminal handling Iran’s oil exports.

Iran warns evacuation near UAE ports amid Strait tensions

Tehran claimed the US had used “ports, docks and hideouts” in the UAE to carry out strikes on Kharg Island. However, Iranian officials did not provide evidence to support the claim. Iranian authorities urged residents to leave areas where they said US forces were operating.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the United States attacked Kharg Island and Abu Musa Island from two locations in the UAE. He named Ras Al Khaimah and a location “very close to Dubai” as the launch points. At the same time, he described the situation as dangerous but said Iran would try to avoid targeting populated areas.

Meanwhile, US Central Command said it had no response to Iran’s claims. A diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, Anwar Gargash, addressed the situation on social media. He said the UAE has the right to defend itself but “still prioritises reason and logic, and continues exercising restraint.”

Global concern grows over Strait of Hormuz security

As global concerns rise over oil supply and prices, Trump called on several countries to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. He mentioned China, France, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom among those he hoped would send warships to maintain safe shipping.

Britain later said it was discussing a “range of options” with allies to secure maritime traffic. Meanwhile, Iranian officials repeated warnings about possible attacks on energy and economic infrastructure in the region if Iran’s oil facilities were targeted.

Iran has fired hundreds of missiles and drones toward Arab Gulf neighbors during the conflict. Iranian officials said the strikes targeted US assets, although reports indicated that some attempts involved civilian sites such as airports and oil fields.

The crisis has also worsened humanitarian conditions in Lebanon. Reports said more than 800 people were killed and about 850,000 displaced after Israel launched waves of strikes against Iran backed Hezbollah militants.
