- Parents, officials raise concerns over food safety in government hostels
Around 20 students fell ill after consuming stale food at a government run Scheduled Caste hostel in Bellampalli. The incident occurred on Friday night. It raised fresh concerns over food safety and hygiene in hostels run by the government.
Officials said between 15 and 25 students were hospitalised after having dinner at the hostel around 9 pm. Soon after the meal, several students reportedly fainted. The food they consumed allegedly contained worms. Therefore, staff rushed the affected students to a hospital in the town. Police and other officials later visited the hospital while treatment was ongoing. Meanwhile, doctors stated that the medical condition of two students was critical.
Students Fall Ill After Stale Dinner, Officials Visit Hospital
Local authorities moved quickly after receiving information about the incident. They monitored the treatment process and spoke to students. However, concerns continued to grow as parents gathered at the hospital seeking answers. Many parents expressed fear and anger over repeated incidents linked to food contamination in hostels.
Former Bellampalli MLA Durgam Chinnaiah also visited the hospital after learning about the students who fell ill. He urged officials to ensure better treatment for all affected students. He also called on authorities to make sure that quality food was cooked in hygienic surroundings. Alleging that food contamination incidents in government run hostels had become a routine affair, he said this exposed the callousness of officials responsible for supervising such facilities.
Parents expressed serious concern over what they described as a recurring menace of food contamination. They urged officials to take strict precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future. They alleged that hostel students were often served stale and worm infested food. According to them, officials showed negligence in controlling the problem. Therefore, they warned that such lapses were putting students lives at risk.
The Bellampalli incident has also revived memories of a previous tragedy. On October 30 last year, over 60 students fell ill after consuming dinner at a hostel in Wankidi mandal headquarters in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district. Later, one of the victims, Choudari Shailaja, died while undergoing treatment at NIMS in Hyderabad on November 25. Following that food poisoning incident, authorities transferred five staff members. These included the headmaster of the Ashram school at Wankidi mandal for girls. They were moved for dereliction of duty.
The latest case where students fell ill has again highlighted the urgent need for strict monitoring of food quality in hostels. However, officials are yet to announce any further action.
