Supreme Court Concludes Hearing on BRS MLAs’ Disqualification Case, Verdict Reserved
Delhi/Hyderabad, April 3 (Maxim News): The Supreme Court has completed the hearing on petitions related to the disqualification of ten BRS MLAs who switched parties. The petitions were filed by BRS working president K. Taraka Rama Rao and MLAs Padi Kaushik Reddy and KP Vivekananda, questioning why the Speaker had not acted on their disqualification requests.
Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented the Telangana Assembly Speaker’s office, while Aryama Sundaram argued on behalf of Kaushik Reddy. After hearing both sides, the Supreme Court reserved its verdict.
During the hearing on Thursday, Singhvi argued that there is no fixed time limit for the Speaker to decide on such petitions. Justice B.R. Gavai responded, “What do you think is a reasonable time?” He also expressed concern about how lawyers handle these cases, saying their approach seems to change once they reach the Supreme Court.
Kaushik Reddy’s lawyer, Aryama Sundaram, referred to recent statements made by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in the Assembly. He told the court that the CM had claimed, “By-elections will not happen,” and suggested that the Speaker was also of the same opinion. Sundaram argued that the CM’s statement implied that he believed his words in the Assembly were beyond the court’s reach. Justice Gavai responded, “Can’t the Chief Minister control his words? This is not the first time something like this has happened.”
At one point, Singhvi pointed out that even opposition leaders had made provocative statements. However, the bench dismissed these comments as irrelevant. Justice Gavai remarked that the CM’s words could be seen as contempt of court and emphasized that all constitutional institutions should respect each other.
Singhvi also argued that after filing their complaints with the Speaker, the petitioners tried to pressure the court by taking legal action. Justice Gavai noted that if the Speaker had followed the directions given by a single-judge bench earlier, this case wouldn’t have reached this stage.
With all arguments completed, the Supreme Court has now reserved its verdict. (Maxim News)
