Supreme Court Verdict Exposes BRS Hypocrisy on Defections, Says Shabbir Ali

Hyderabad, July 31 (Maxim News): Senior Congress leader and Telangana Government Advisor for SC, ST, BC & Minorities Welfare, Mohammed Ali Shabbir, has hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict directing the Telangana Assembly Speaker to take action on disqualification petitions against 10 MLAs who recently shifted allegiance to the ruling Congress party.

Shabbir Ali described the judgment as a vindication of constitutional authority and a sharp rebuke to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), accusing it of hypocrisy and selective constitutional interpretation.

Supreme Court Ruling Reinforces Speaker’s Powers

Speaking to the media, Shabbir Ali emphasized that the apex court has clearly upheld the Speaker’s jurisdiction in disqualification matters, rejecting K.T. Rama Rao’s petition that sought to undermine the Speaker’s role.

“We have received the kind of verdict we expected. The Supreme Court has rightly protected the Speaker’s powers while emphasizing that both the Assembly and Judiciary function independently,” he stated.

BRS Accused of Double Standards on Defections

Shabbir Ali launched a scathing attack on BRS leadership, particularly former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), for what he termed as a decade-long misuse of the anti-defection law.

“No leader in India has weakened the anti-defection law like KCR. He facilitated the defection of at least 43 elected representatives over ten years without any accountability,” Shabbir said.

He also recalled losing his own position as Leader of Opposition in the Telangana Legislative Council due to the defection of Congress MLCs, allegedly orchestrated by the then BRS government.

Timeline of BRS-Led Defections

Shabbir Ali cited several examples to illustrate BRS’s pattern of political manipulation:

  • On June 2, 2014, the very day of Telangana’s formation, two BSP MLAs—Indrakaran Reddy and Koneru Konappa—joined BRS.
  • Later, TDP MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav was inducted as a minister while still a TDP member, violating constitutional norms.
  • Between 2014–2018, 4 MPs, 25 MLAs, and 18 MLCs defected to BRS.
  • During 2018–2023, the number included 12 Congress MLAs and 2 TDP MLAs.

“These were not isolated incidents. They were part of a systemic effort to cripple the opposition and consolidate power,” he alleged.

Court Verdict a Blow to Political Opportunism

According to Shabbir Ali, the Supreme Court’s ruling sends a strong message: constitutional offices must not be misused for political convenience

“The court has reaffirmed that the Speaker holds full authority to decide disqualification petitions—and must do so within a stipulated time,” he said.

He noted that the BRS, which once used the Speaker’s office to validate defections, is now ironically questioning the same institution’s legitimacy.

Restoration of Faith in Constitutional Governance

Calling the verdict a victory for democracy, Shabbir Ali said it exposed BRS’s political opportunism and restored faith in India’s constitutional processes.

“This judgment is not just about disqualification petitions—it is about preserving the sanctity of democratic institutions. BRS’s contradiction has been called out, and the rule of law has prevailed,” he concluded.
