With this win, India became the first nation in history to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title. The triumph also marked India’s third crown in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. India post record total in T20 World Cup 2026 final

India set the tone with a massive batting display after being asked to bat first. The team posted 255 for five in 20 overs, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

Sanju Samson played a crucial role in the innings. He scored an impressive 89 runs off 46 balls and anchored the Indian batting effort. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan also contributed with quick fifties to strengthen the total.

India began cautiously and scored only 12 runs in the first two overs. However, the momentum changed from the third over. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson attacked the New Zealand bowlers and pushed the score to 92 without loss in the powerplay. This matched the joint highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history.

Abhishek Sharma reached his fifty in just 18 balls. His knock included six fours and three sixes. However, Rachin Ravindra dismissed him in the eighth over when the opener edged a delivery behind.

Despite the wicket, India maintained pressure. Sanju Samson continued the assault and later reached his fifty in 33 balls. It was his third successive half century in the tournament. Ishan Kishan also played aggressively and scored 54 off 25 balls.

Both batters fell in the 16th over, when James Neesham removed them in quick succession. Soon after, Suryakumar Yadav also departed, and India slipped from 203 for one to 204 for four.

However, Shivam Dube added late momentum by striking 24 runs off the final over. As a result, India finished with a record total of 255 for five.

New Zealand struggled while chasing the target. Tim Seifert scored 52, but the rest of the batting line up could not keep pace with the required run rate.

Jasprit Bumrah delivered an outstanding bowling performance and took four wickets for 15 runs. Axar Patel supported him well with three wickets for 27 runs. Varun Chakravarthy also claimed a wicket as India kept control throughout the innings.

New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. Bumrah and Chakravarthy finished the tournament as the joint highest wicket takers with 14 wickets each.
