The issue gained urgency after directions from the Telangana High Court. During the last Assembly elections, the Congress party had promised benefits under the Abhaya Hastham Scheme.

The party assured eligible Telangana activists 250 square yards of house site, a monthly pension of about Rs 25,000, and other welfare benefits.

However, leaders of the Telangana Movement JAC approached the High Court.

They alleged that the government had not implemented the promised benefits for those who participated in the statehood movement.
