Telangana: Four women dead, 30 hospitalized after family planning surgery
Hyderabad, August 31st: Authorities have transferred the remaining 30 women to hospitals for treatment after four women died following Double Puncture Laparoscopy (DPL) procedures at a family planning surgery camp in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district.
Health authorities said the condition of the women was stable.
13 ladies were admitted to Apollo Hospitals, and the remaining 17 were sent to Hyderabad’s government-run Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of NIMS was providing care for two women. They were receiving care at the ICU because, according to doctors, they were physically weak.
Doctors said there was no need for any concern and all women were likely to be discharged in a couple of days.
T. Harish Rao, the health minister, met the women on Wednesday at NIMS Hospital. He assured the media that all the women were secure and would be released in two to three days.
The minister said that the women were receiving the greatest care from the government. One doctor is keeping track of each patient.
At the female sterilisation camp held on August 25 at a Civil Hospital in Ibrahimpatnam in the Ranga Reddy district, four women have passed away as a result of problems after receiving DPL.
They reported having acute gastroenteritis, however they passed away while receiving treatment. On Monday and Tuesday, there were reportedly two deaths.
Harish Rao called the occurrence regrettable and noted that it had never occurred in the history of the state. In the last six to seven years, 12 lakh women had surgery for family planning in the state, he noted.
According to the health minister, the incident was seriously considered by the government, and the surgeons’ licences have been suspended as a result. The hospital’s superintendent has also been permanently suspended by the government.
According to Harish Rao, the government has asked Dr. G. Srinivasa Rao, director of public health, to conduct an investigation. He planned to get the report turned in within a week or ten days.
“We will take measures against anybody deemed to be negligent after getting the report. We will take the necessary steps to stop similar occurrences from happening again, he declared.
On Thursday, the autopsy results for four women should be available. Officials will probably utilise this to determine the cause of the fatalities.
34 women underwent operations at the camp, according to Dr. G Srinivasa Rao, director of public health. Later, four of them sought treatment at private hospitals for acute gastroenteritis. All four of the women passed away while receiving medical attention.
According to the director of public health, DPL, tubectomy, and vasectomy procedures are performed as part of standard training exercises at sterilisation camps. The procedures are performed by skilled physicians. This occurrence is an outlier. We are investigating the causes of the regrettable situation,” he stated.
The authority claims that DPL is a recommended procedure for women who want minimally invasive permanent sterilisation. Women who undergo DPL may be released the same day and may immediately resume their normal activities.
The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh and two bed-room houses each for the family of the deceased. Surviving children of the deceased will be given admission in residential schools.
