Telangana Govt Allots 3.95 Acres: Plan To Strengthens Hyderabad’s Future Water Security With New Reservoir
Hyderabad, Feb. 28 (Maxim News): The Telangana government has allocated 3.95 acres of land to the Water Board to strengthen drinking water supply in the fast-growing Neopolis region of Hyderabad.
Hyderabad, especially areas around the Outer Ring Road, is witnessing rapid population growth.
As a result, the demand for drinking water is rising sharply. Therefore, the government has taken steps to meet future needs.
To address this demand, the state is implementing the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project Phase II and III.
In addition, the project aims to rejuvenate the Musi River and fill Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs with Godavari water. For this purpose, the government plans to draw an additional 300 MGD of water.
Meanwhile, the Neopolis and Kokapet areas are experiencing intense vertical urban growth.
Consequently, water consumption in these zones has increased significantly. To tackle this issue, authorities have already begun construction of a sump, pump house, section office, GLSR, and STP in the Kokapet Neopolis layout. The works are currently in progress.
However, the existing land at Khanapur, measuring 8.75 acres, is sufficient only for a 22.5 ML Master Balancing Reservoir, two Elevated Level Service Reservoirs (ELSRs), a chlorination room, and a maintenance unit. Therefore, additional land became necessary.
The Water Board requested allocation of adjoining land identified by HMDA. This includes 1.18 acres for an Overhead Tank (OHT), 0.77 acres for a site office, and 2 acres belonging to an ashram. Together, this totals 3.95 acres.
Importantly, the land lies at an elevation of approximately +592 meters. Because of this favorable topography, water can be supplied through gravity.
In other words, pumping will not be required. As a result, the government can save significant electricity costs.
Following this proposal, the government has now issued official orders allotting the 3.95 acres at the Khanapur campus.
Once completed, the new reservoir will supply water not only to Neopolis and Kokapet but also to the Bojagutta Reservoir through gravity.
Furthermore, residents of the Old City, Shaikpet, Red Hills, and Mehdipatnam will benefit from gravity-based drinking water supply.
Overall, this decision marks a major step toward securing Hyderabad’s long-term water needs. At the same time, it reduces operational costs and improves efficiency in water distribution.
