Telangana: Heavy Rains Continues to Pound State
Hyderabad: Normal life was affected in several parts of the State as incessant rains continued to pound Telangana on Thursday, resulting in rivulets, streams and tanks overflowing in some districts. The weatherman has forecast more rains in the next couple of days.
Till 7 pm on Thursday, Dilawarpur and Nirmal received the highest rainfall of 92.8 mm, followed by 92.3 mm in Mendora and Nizamabad, and 73.8 mm in Mortad and Nizamabad. Overflowing rivulets inundated low-lying areas and affected vehicular movement in different parts of the State.
Three persons stranded in Ekinpurvagu on the outskirts of Korutla town were rescued after a four-hour rescue operation. In the morning, the trio had gone to the rivulet that flows between Ekinpur and Sangham villages and got stranded due to the sudden inflows. Locals alerted the police.
In the Metpalli area, road connectivity to several villages was cut off as minor irrigation projects, streams and rivulets were overflowing.
In Yadadri-Bhongir district, Baswapur Cheruvu in Thurkapally mandal, Gandamalla Cheruvu in Rajapet mandal and Veerla Cheruvu in Athmakur mandal were overflowing with heavy inflows from feeder channels. Bunadigani canal developed a breach at Padamatisomaram village in Bibinagar mandal on Thursday morning. The officials swung into action and took up repair works immediately.
Road connectivity between Boodhan Pochampally and Bibinagar was disrupted as Musi water was overflowing over a culvert at Rudhravelli in Bibinagar mandal. Peddavagu, a key stream in Siddipet district, is in spate following heavy rains in its catchment areas in Maddur, Cheriyal and Gajwel mandals of the district.
Tourist flow to Bogatha waterfalls at Koyaveerapuram of Wazeedu mandal picked up following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Cheekupally Vagu since last week.
Between June 1 and 15, the State’s average rainfall was 369.7 mm against the average normal rainfall of 236.33 mm. Seventeen districts recorded large excess rainfall (more than 60 per cent) while 13 districts recorded excess rainfall (ranging between 20 and 59 per cent) and three districts, including Mancherial, Nagarkurnool and Peddapalli recorded normal rainfall.
Heavy rains are likely to occur at isolated places in Rajanna-Sircilla, Karimnagar, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Siddipet, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy on Friday. Thereafter, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected at a few places on Saturday and Sunday. Met officials said heavy rains are occurring in the State as the Southwest monsoon has been active over Telangana.
