Schools that serve as polling centres will remain closed for nearly six days. Officials declared these holidays in view of the three phase polling schedule for the panchayat elections.
Schools received holidays on the 10 and 11 of this month for the first phase of polling. District collectors issued formal orders for the closures.
Meanwhile, the second phase of elections will take place on the 13 of the month, which is a second Saturday, and the 14, which falls on a Sunday.
Therefore, schools in the polling areas will remain closed on these days as well. Later, the third phase of polling will lead to holidays again on the 16 and 17 for the same set of schools.
Officials extended these holidays because they needed time to arrange election material and prepare the polling stations.

They said the work required careful planning and could not be completed in a single day. Therefore, closing the schools was necessary for smooth election management.
At the same time, the government issued an order that all government and private employees and workers in the polling areas should receive a paid holiday on the 11. This decision was taken to support better participation in the election process.
The schools that were closed earlier for the first phase will shut again for the third phase. Students and teachers will gain a short break due to the extended closures.
However, the administration said the decisions were made only to support efficient election work.
The continued polling activity has therefore created a long period of temporary disruption for schools. The officials said all institutions would reopen after the election duties end.
The state continues to focus on conducting the local body elections peacefully and in a well organised manner.
