Telangana Monsoon Forecast Signals Heatwave Risk

The IMD released its second stage long range forecast for the Southwest Monsoon on Friday. It placed the South Peninsular region, including Telangana, in the below normal rainfall category.

The forecast said seasonal rainfall could remain around 90 percent of the Long Period Average. It also estimated a 45 percent chance of rainfall staying below 94 percent of the average.

The Telangana monsoon forecast has raised concerns over delayed rainfall activity across the state. Unlike previous years, the monsoon is expected to advance slowly during June.

The IMD also warned that isolated areas in Telangana could continue to face more heatwave days than usual, even after the official monsoon onset.

Telangana Monsoon Forecast Raises Concerns

Earlier, weather experts expected the Indian Ocean Dipole to strengthen monsoon winds and improve rainfall activity across India. However, the IMD confirmed that the Indian Ocean Dipole currently remains neutral.

The department also said there are no signs of the dipole shifting into a positive phase to counter the developing El Niño conditions.

According to the forecast, June rainfall across the country is likely to remain below the 92 percent threshold. This could affect early sowing activities and water availability in several regions.

The IMD will release its detailed July rainfall forecast during the last week of June. Meanwhile, state agencies, including the Telangana State Development Planning Society, will continue monitoring district wise rainfall patterns throughout the season.
