At the meeting held at his camp office in Kundan Bagh, Uttam Kumar Reddy presented a broad picture of Telangana’s growth story, emphasising agriculture, information technology, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and food processing as areas of strength. He invited Danish companies to explore partnerships ranging from clean energy to dairy, noting that Telangana’s policy framework, infrastructure and skilled workforce create an enabling climate for investors.

Uttam Kumar Reddy told the visiting diplomat that Telangana, India’s youngest state, had quickly emerged as one of the country’s fastest-growing economies. “Out of 29 states, we are probably the fastest growing and also among the most investor-friendly,” he said, citing double-digit growth, the highest per capita income in India, and consistently high investment inflows.

He pointed out that Telangana contributes around 5% to India’s GDP with only about 2.9% of the country’s population, giving it an enviably high per capita income. In the last financial year, the state registered a real growth rate of nearly 11%, placing it among the top performers nationwide. The minister underlined the government’s goal to transform Telangana into a $1 trillion economy within a decade.

Positioning Telangana as India’s leading rice producer, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the state exports to several countries and has made major strides in farm welfare. He recalled the Rs. 2 lakh loan waiver scheme and provision of free electricity for farmers, measures that have made over 84% of farmers debt-free — among the highest levels in the country.

At the same time, the government is moving towards sustainable agriculture. “We are introducing solar-powered pumps and off-grid energy solutions, so that farmers not only achieve self-sufficiency but can also contribute power back to the grid,” he explained.

He also pointed to food distribution initiatives such as the Fine Rice Scheme and the ration card system, which he said were crucial in ensuring food security for lakhs of households.

Uttam Kumar Reddy described Hyderabad as both India’s “vaccine capital” and an emerging “Silicon Valley of the East.” He noted that the city is home to global pharmaceutical companies supplying medicines and vaccines to more than 120 countries.

On the IT side, he said Hyderabad’s software sector was booming along with a rapid expansion in data centres. “We host some of the largest facilities of Amazon and Microsoft globally. With the growth of AI, the demand for power and data infrastructure will only increase,” he told the envoy.

To ensure sustainable growth, the government is zoning new industrial and data centre corridors outside the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and planning a larger Regional Ring Road. “Our vision is to power these zones entirely with green energy,” he added.

Given Denmark’s global leadership in clean energy, discussions focused heavily on renewable opportunities. Uttam Kumar Reddy underlined Telangana’s commitment to the green transition. “We want Hyderabad to become a net zero city by a declared date, and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has already initiated steps such as electrifying the city’s bus fleet,” he said.

Ambassador Kristensen explained Denmark’s “Impact Fund,” backed by major pension funds and the government’s AAA rating, which channels billions into clean energy, agriculture, water and healthcare projects worldwide. “India, and Telangana in particular, are already among the largest recipients of this fund,” he revealed.

Uttam Kumar Reddy responded that Telangana had prepared detailed project reports for renewable and infrastructure projects, mapping out financial, social and environmental impacts, and was ready to present bankable proposals to Danish investors.

Kristensen noted that Telangana was emerging as a preferred alternative to Bengaluru, with Danish firms increasingly choosing Hyderabad for their global capability centres. “Carlsberg, for instance, has been here for years with a brewery and is now looking at further expansion,” he said.

He added that several other Danish companies already have operations in Telangana, while more are actively exploring investment opportunities. Novo Nordisk, through its philanthropic arm, has also supported ICRISAT in developing climate-resilient crops such as sorghum and millet.

Uttam Kumar Reddy welcomed these initiatives and assured state support for further expansion. He even suggested suitable sites with assured water supply for new brewery investments, offering concessional land and water terms to Carlsberg and other Danish firms.

A key area of discussion was dairy development. Kristensen admitted that Denmark’s efforts to establish a model dairy project in Himachal Pradesh had faced regulatory hurdles. Uttam Kumar Reddy pitched Telangana as a better option. “Telangana contributes nearly 12% of India’s milk production. With Danish technology and branding, we can not only boost domestic dairy production but also process and export from here,” he suggested.

He assured the envoy that Telangana’s administration would provide round-the-clock support to clear bottlenecks. “Unlike in many places, our Chief Minister and bureaucracy are committed to fast-tracking viable projects,” he said.

As Irrigation Minister, Uttam Kumar Reddy stressed water as a critical area for collaboration. He said Telangana is investing heavily in irrigation to ensure water security for agriculture and urban needs. Danish companies like Grundfos and Danfoss, known for advanced pump and sensor technologies, could help reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency.

Kristensen, who has worked with Danish water technology firms, agreed that irrigation and water management could be a major pillar of cooperation under the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership signed in 2022.

Uttam Kumar Reddy invited Kristensen and his family to explore Telangana’s tourism offerings, assuring them of a warm welcome. He praised Scandinavian countries for their commitment to human rights and peace, while noting mutual admiration. “We admire Denmark for its values and achievements. You will enjoy our weather, our people, and our heritage,” he said.

The conversation also touched on cultural anecdotes, from Oktoberfest to Danish pastries, underscoring the informal goodwill generated during the meeting.

Ambassador Kristensen appreciated the state’s hospitality and acknowledged Telangana’s growing role as an investment hub. He said Danish businesses were increasingly shifting from other cities to Hyderabad because of its talent pool, infrastructure and business-friendly environment. He also confirmed that Denmark was looking at opportunities in renewable energy, agriculture, climate adaptation and healthcare in Telangana.

He assured Uttam Kumar Reddy that the Danish Embassy would work closely with Telangana officials and Danish companies, particularly in identifying bankable projects suited to Danish pension funds’ investment criteria. (Maxim News)
