Telangana Panchayat Elections: Congress Surges Ahead in Phase 1
Telangana Panchayat Elections | Hyderabad, Dec. 12: The first phase of the Telangana panchayat polls concluded peacefully, with officials reporting only scattered incidents across the state.
Polling began at seven in the morning and continued until one in the afternoon. Voters who were already in the queue by the cutoff time were allowed to cast their votes.
Counting started at two in the afternoon, and most results were announced by six in the evening. Villages with a high number of wards continued counting until midnight, which delayed the release of final figures.
Telangana Panchayat Elections | Congress Leads First Phase
Congress backed candidates dominated the first phase and secured victory in most seats. According to official data, Congress candidates won 2872 positions. This outcome strengthened the party’s rural presence.
On the other hand, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the Bharatiya Janata Party suffered setbacks despite projecting the panchayat elections as matters of prestige. BRS supported candidates won 1160 seats, while BJP candidates secured only 195 seats.
Independent candidates also showed notable performance. They won 460 positions and added competitive pressure in several mandals.
Stringent police security was maintained at all polling stations and counting centres. The Director General of Police, Shivdhar Reddy, had earlier announced that victory rallies would not be permitted across the state. Authorities stated that the restrictions ensured a peaceful counting process.
The first phase of the panchayat elections covered 3834 sarpanch seats and more than 27600 ward member positions.
With polling completed for these segments, officials are now preparing for the next phase. They also confirmed that overall voter turnout remained steady across most regions, supported by timely arrangements at polling stations.
