Hyderabad: The Telangana government has begun planning the relocation and reconstruction of defence infrastructure at the Artillery Centre in Golconda to make way for the proposed Gandhi Sarovar Project at Bapu Ghat.
The move follows approval from the Ministry of Defence for the transfer and working permission of 83 acres of defence land for the project.
The Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL) is now preparing plans for relocating defence assets located on the identified land. The infrastructure will be reconstructed at alternative sites approved by defence authorities.
Gandhi Sarovar Project to trigger major defence infrastructure shift
The proposed Gandhi Sarovar Project is planned at the confluence of the Musa and Esi rivulets with the Musi river. The project is part of the state’s broader plans for development around Bapu Ghat and the Musi River.
MRDCL will appoint consultants to prepare the project’s layout and master plan. The consultancy will also cover architectural and structural designs, a detailed project report, cost estimates and tender documents.
Consultants will further provide technical support during construction and assist in obtaining approvals from defence and other statutory authorities.
The relocation plan covers around 11,804 square metres of permanent buildings and 20,450 square metres of covered structures and sheds. It also includes approximately 9,254 square metres of roads, pavements and hard standings and nearly 2 km of road works.
A major part of the plan involves creating new connectivity within the relocated defence facilities. The proposed infrastructure includes three bridges, two underpasses, three culverts and an elevated four to six-lane road.
Among the key works is a 660-metre elevated road connecting an underpass to Army School and Rodrigues Regiment. The plan also includes a 75-metre bridge across the Musi and a 45-metre underpass below Chevella Road.
Another proposed 60-metre bridge will cross the Ibrahim Cheruvu surplus nala, while a 165-metre bridge will connect 17 Dogra with the Firing Range.
The plan also includes a 100-metre underpass below Shankarpally Road, along with approach roads to improve connectivity.
Around 3.46 km of security walls and fencing are also proposed as part of the relocation works. Training and sports facilities, utilities, drainage, water supply, sewerage systems and electrical networks will also be developed.
The project will include generators and landscaping, besides other supporting infrastructure required for the relocated facilities.
The appointed consultant will assess existing defence assets and their operational requirements before preparing detailed relocation layouts and designs. Surveys and technical studies will also be carried out as part of the exercise.
Sources said the relocation process is intended to ensure that defence facilities continue to meet operational requirements while clearing the way for the proposed Gandhi Sarovar and Musi Riverfront development at Bapu Ghat.
