Telangana RTC Reports Huge Profits with Free Bus Travel for Women
Hyderabad, Mar 23 (Maxim News): Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has recorded huge profits following the implementation of the Mahalakshmi scheme, which provides free bus travel for women. Officials revealed that the daily occupancy rate in RTC buses, which averaged 45.49 lakh passengers under the previous BRS government, has now increased to 59.10 lakh per day. This surge has added 13.61 lakh daily passengers.
Government’s Financial Support Boosts RTC Revenue
The debt-ridden transport corporation has seen a remarkable turnaround in its financial performance since the Congress government introduced the Mahalakshmi scheme. Under this initiative, women have been traveling for free in ordinary and express buses since December 9, 2023, with the state government covering the full fare for RTC.
As a result, RTC has been on a profitable path, earning Rs. 104.11 crore in the financial year 2023-24 and Rs. 629.20 crore by the end of 2024-25. The government estimates that RTC’s profit will reach Rs. 1,008.79 crore in 2025-26.
Outstanding Dues and Financial Challenges
Despite the profits, RTC still has significant financial liabilities. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, while presenting the transport department’s financial report in the budget, revealed that as of February 28, 2025, RTC’s total outstanding dues stand at Rs. 9,897.55 crore. This includes:
- Bank loans: Rs. 2,719.71 crore
- Pending dues to employees: Rs. 7,177.84 crore
- Past RTC losses: Rs. 10,327.89 crore
While the corporation’s profits signal a positive turnaround, addressing long-standing debts and employee dues remains a key challenge for the government. (Maxim News)
