Telangana IPS cadre strength | Hyderabad, July 27: The Telangana government has stepped up efforts to increase the sanctioned strength of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the state, citing growing administrative responsibilities and the need to strengthen law and order.
The state has formally requested the Centre to raise its IPS cadre strength from 151 to 194 posts.
The proposal is based on a Mid Cadre Review prepared by the Telangana Police Department. The file is currently pending with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and the state police are awaiting its approval.

The state government believes the existing IPS cadre is no longer adequate following Telangana’s formation and the expansion of its administrative and policing structure.
The creation of new districts, the establishment of additional police commissionerates, and the strengthening of specialised wings such as Cyber Crime and Narcotics have significantly increased the demand for senior police officers.
According to the existing notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Telangana has a sanctioned IPS cadre strength of 151 officers. However, the state police have concluded that this number falls short of current operational requirements.
The Director General of Police (DGP) submitted a comprehensive Mid Cadre Review report to the state government on November 10 last year, recommending that Telangana’s IPS cadre strength be increased to 194 officers.
After examining the proposal, the state government formally wrote to the Union Home Ministry on April 25, 2026, requesting approval for 43 additional IPS posts. The proposal highlights both present requirements and future administrative challenges.
If the Centre approves the request, it will help address the shortage of senior officers across the state.
Moreover, it will create opportunities for promotions to the ranks of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Inspector General (IG), and Additional Director General (ADG). It will also enable the government to post more Superintendents of Police (SPs) in districts and strengthen overall policing.
Police officials remain optimistic that the Centre will respond positively, noting that the additional cadre strength is essential to improve law enforcement and meet Telangana’s expanding administrative needs.
