WATCH | Tension Erupts Over Musi River Demolitions: Families Protest in Malakpet

Hyderabad, Feb 22 (Maxim News): Tensions ran high in Malakpet as demolition drives linked to the Musi River revival project faced strong opposition from affected residents. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) initiated demolitions to clear encroachments as part of the government’s ambitious effort to rejuvenate the Musi River.

However, the operation was met with resistance from local residents, who blocked the demolitions, voicing concerns about unfair rehabilitation measures. The affected families alleged that the government is offering only a single double-bedroom house per structure, despite many houses accommodating four to six families. Protesters demanded that every family be provided with separate housing as part of the rehabilitation package.

The Revanth Reddy-led government has prioritized the Musi River Revival Project with a goal of completing the development by 2030. As part of the project, tenders have been issued for the construction of a trunk pipeline to channel clean water from Mallanna Sagar.

Despite the protests, officials stated that those displaced from the riverbed had been provided with full assistance and support. The government remains determined to accelerate the project, especially with support from BJP leaders, who have acknowledged the importance of the initiative for the city’s development.

Authorities believe that completing work in each area will help convince those in the buffer zones to cooperate, easing the relocation process for affected families in other parts of the city. (Maxim News)
