Hyderabad: The Afzalgunj police have apprehended a three-member auto theft gang involved in stealing valuables from passengers inside an auto rickshaw. The accused were identified as Syed Ghayaz Hashmi, an auto driver, Syed Abdul Hassan, also known as Kala Jamun, who works in paintwork, and Md Waseem, another auto driver. However, the primary accused, Zubair Lala, remains absconding.
Auto theft gang targeted passengers in Afzalgunj
According to the police, the arrests followed a complaint filed on Wednesday by P Dayanand, a retired employee. He told the police that he was waiting for an RTC bus at the 2J bus stop in Afzalgunj. Meanwhile, he boarded an auto rickshaw in which three men were already seated in the rear.
After he sat at the corner, the men deliberately disturbed him. They asked him to sit properly and created discomfort. A short distance later, near the Dental College, the driver stopped the auto. He claimed that the vehicle had developed a mechanical problem. Therefore, P Dayanand got down from the auto.
Shortly after walking some distance, he realised that Rs 1500 had been stolen from his pocket. He then approached the Afzalgunj police and lodged a complaint. The police registered a case and immediately launched an investigation.
Police track suspects using CCTV footage
The crime team examined CCTV footage from the area. They also conducted local enquiries. As a result, they identified and apprehended the three suspects. The police also seized the auto rickshaw used in the offence.
G Chandra Mohan, DCP Golconda Zone, explained the gang’s method. He said the group operated in a passenger auto rickshaw. One person drove the vehicle, while three others sat behind. They mainly targeted single, middle-aged, or elderly passengers.

Once a victim boarded the auto, the gang created an uneasy atmosphere. They distracted the passenger while committing the theft. Later, they forced the victim to get down by citing a vehicle breakdown. The police are now searching for the absconding accused, Zubair Lala. They are also trying to recover more stolen property.
