Three month ration rice distribution begins across the state
ration rice distribution | Hyderabad, April 1: The Civil Supplies Department has started distributing fine rice for three months through ration shops across the state.
The government took this decision to help beneficiaries avoid standing in queues every month during the peak summer.
At the same time, the Centre also wants to clear excess rice stocks lying in warehouses. Moreover, with fresh seasonal procurement expected soon, officials plan to distribute the existing stock quickly to ration card holders.
Officials said large quantities of rice from previous procurement seasons remain in storage. In addition, recently milled rice has also added to the stock. Therefore, the Centre decided to speed up distribution.
Ration rice distribution | Over 3 crore beneficiaries to get ration
Authorities completed the transport of rice from district godowns to ration shops last week. Meanwhile, the Centre also directed states to ensure smooth supply without disruption.
Across the state, about 1.05 crore ration cards cover nearly 3.20 crore beneficiaries. Under the plan, about 2.15 lakh metric tonnes of rice will be distributed.
Under the food security scheme, each person will get 6 kg of rice. Antyodaya card holders will receive 35 kg per family. Annapurna card holders will get 10 kg of fine rice and 5 kg of wheat.
Ration distribution will take place from 8 am to 2 pm and again from 4 pm to 8 pm. The process will continue for a month. Meanwhile, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy recently announced that new ration shops will open from April. As a result, supply speed is expected to improve.
Dealers face storage and technical issues
However, the decision has created difficulties for ration dealers. Many shops lack storage space to hold three months of stock at once. Therefore, dealers are struggling to manage the supply.
Officials are considering supplying rice based on demand to avoid storage pressure. Meanwhile, technical problems in e-POS machines are also causing delays. Separate biometric verification for each family member is slowing distribution.
Dealers also said weighing large quantities at once is becoming difficult. Transporting three times the usual monthly stock is also adding to their workload. They said it takes nearly 20 minutes to serve one ration card holder under current conditions.
Therefore, dealers have requested software improvements. They also asked for relaxation in Bluetooth device usage rules. They suggested allowing full family quota distribution in one transaction. According to them, removing some technical steps may speed up distribution.
