Hyderabad: Tirumala Laddu Row took a new turn after the Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea seeking action against individuals or organisations accused of spreading misinformation. The petition had sought directions to act against those allegedly spreading claims through posters or public statements about the Tirumala laddu controversy.
The development came during a hearing on Friday when the top court said a criminal case had already been registered in the matter. The court also noted that the investigation is currently in progress.
Supreme Court points to ongoing probe in Tirumala Laddu Row
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi considered the plea during the hearing. However, the bench declined to pass directions regarding action against those accused of spreading misinformation.
The court said the investigation into the issue is already underway. Therefore, it stated that the petitioner or any other interested individual can provide relevant materials directly to the investigating agency.
According to the bench, this approach would help authorities take the investigation forward and reach a logical conclusion. The court thus made it clear that the matter should proceed through the ongoing probe.
Background of Tirumala Laddu Row and SIT probe
Earlier, on October 4, 2024, the Supreme Court had constituted a five member independent Special Investigation Team to examine allegations linked to the preparation of Tirupati laddus. The step was taken after claims surfaced about the use of animal fat in the preparation of the laddus.
At that time, the court stated that the probe was necessary to “assuage the feelings of crores of people”. The bench also clarified that the court should not become a forum for political disputes.
While addressing the matter earlier, the court had remarked that it cannot be used as a “political battleground”. The observation came in the context of the controversy and the public debate surrounding it.
Meanwhile, the court reiterated during the latest hearing that the investigation is ongoing. Therefore, individuals who possess relevant evidence may submit it to the probe agency.
The Supreme Court maintained that the proper course is to allow investigators to examine the matter and determine the facts through the established legal process.
