Tomatoes Can Stay Fresh Upto 15 Days Without Refrigerated
Lucknow/Hyderabad The ‘CSR-NBRI” (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Botanical Research Institute) Lucknow has recently revealed that their research has been successful in storing tomatoes for 5 to 15 days.
Anirudha Seni, Chief Scientist of CSIR-NBRI, said that the period of tomato turning into a fruit can be increased. He said that the transportation of tomatoes from distant regions will become easier and the prices of these can be controlled in the future.
Tomatoes have to be transported to the market within three days after harvesting. Otherwise, they will flourish and rot. Due to this farmers are losing completely. On the other hand, the common man is suffering from high prices. Anurudha Seni says that her research will help to change this situation. There is no need to store it in warehouses. “abscisic acid” helps the tomato to become a fruit. We have been able to reduce this enzyme with genetic modifications. As a result, the release of ethylene is delayed and the process of becoming a fruit is slowed down, explained Ajith Kumar, director of NBRI. (Maxim News)
