The litigations are set for their first hearing on January 16th. One petition, filed by senior advocate Phiroze Edulji, claims the same organization responsible for supplying harmful saline in Karnataka, which led to deaths and was blacklisted, also supplied it in West Bengal, causing a death last week. Edulji urges the court to intervene and hold the entity accountable for public health safety. The case will address critical concerns over medical supply regulation and accountability.

What Happened?

Last week, five pregnant women were admitted to Medinipur Medical College and Hospital after being administered expired saline. Sadly, one of the women, Mamoni Ruidas (25), passed away on Friday. The remaining four women were treated at the same hospital, with three of them being transferred to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital in South Kolkata on Sunday night due to a rapid deterioration in their condition. The incident has sparked serious concerns about the safety of medical supplies.

Action taken by the State Govt.

This incident has raised significant concerns, especially as the saline is reportedly supplied by Paschal Bang Pharmaceutical Limited, a company previously banned by both the Karnataka and West Bengal governments. In light of this, the state health department has set up a 13-member inquiry committee to investigate how expired saline was administered to the patients and to determine accountability, ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
