TRP Reporting Ban: Centre Halts TV News Ratings Data

  • TRP reporting ban ordered by Information and Broadcasting Ministry
  • BARC asked to suspend TRP process for four weeks

Hyderabad, Mar 7: TRP Reporting Ban has been imposed by the Centre after it ordered an immediate suspension of Television Rating Points reports for TV news channels. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued directions to the Broadcast Audience Research Council to halt the TRP process for a temporary period.

According to the order, the TRP reporting ban will remain in place for four weeks or until further instructions are issued. Officials said the situation will be reviewed later. After the review, authorities may take further decisions if required.

Meanwhile, sources indicated that the Centre noticed a trend among some television news channels in recent days. Reports suggest that certain channels aired sensational and speculative stories related to the tense situation in West Asia. Therefore, authorities appear to have taken the step to prevent unnecessary panic or confusion among viewers.

Officials also said such coverage can cause anxiety among the public. This concern is particularly strong for families who have relatives or loved ones in areas affected by the conflict. Because of this, authorities believe temporary suspension of TRP reporting may help reduce pressure on channels to compete for ratings through sensational content.

The order was issued to the Broadcast Audience Research Council, commonly known as BARC. This organization measures television viewership and calculates Television Rating Points for channels. The TRP data helps determine how many viewers watch specific programs and channels across the country.

Meanwhile, advertisers also rely on TRP data while planning their advertising investments. Companies often decide where to place advertisements based on viewership ratings released by BARC.

The latest decision has triggered fresh discussion about TRP driven competition in the television news sector. Some observers believe the TRP reporting ban may temporarily reduce intense competition among news channels to secure higher ratings.

However, temporary suspensions of TRP reporting have occurred earlier as well. In the past, authorities imposed similar bans during disputes related to the TRP system. Therefore, the latest order follows a pattern seen during earlier controversies involving television ratings.

For now, the suspension will continue for four weeks or until new orders are issued. Officials said the government will review the situation before deciding whether to extend or lift the TRP reporting ban.
