Hyderabad: Trump praises Pakistan again, drawing sharp criticism from the Congress, which questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy approach. US President Donald Trump made the comments while responding to reporters. When asked, “Will you intervene to stop this war?, he said, “I will intervene. But I will be on Pakistan’s side. I have great respect for the Prime Minister and the military generals there. I think Pakistan is doing a great job.” His remarks referred to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Congress Questions Modi Over Trump Praises Pakistan

Soon after Trump praises Pakistan, the Congress reacted strongly. The party questioned why the US President was praising those responsible for the terror attacks in Pahalgam last year. It also criticized Prime Minister Modi over the issue.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said Donald Trump’s full support for Pakistan in the war with Afghanistan is a setback for India’s foreign policy. He further stated that India’s economic diplomacy with the US has already completely failed. Therefore, he linked the latest remarks to what he called weakening strategic ties.

Ramesh also recalled that Trump imposed heavy tariffs on solar modules imported from India even after the trade agreement. He said that president Trump is repeatedly creating obstacles to India’s strategic diplomacy. Meanwhile, he accused the Modi government of failing to secure India’s interests.

Tensions Rise As Trump Backs Pakistan

The US President’s remarks came at a time of heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore, his statement drew attention in India. However, the Centre has not yet responded publicly to the latest comments.
