- Unanimous elections drive major spending in local bodies
- Villages see sarpanch posts decided without contest
Hyderabad: Unanimous elections in local bodies have drawn attention in Telangana as the first phase of the Panchayat nomination process ended on Saturday. The excitement around the polls has increased across districts. Several villages have chosen their sarpanch candidates without any contest, while some regions reported large financial commitments linked to the local body elections.
In Chinnadi Charlapalli under Konda Mallepally in Nalgonda district, a unanimous election took place for the sarpanch post. Villager Venkatayya Goud was chosen by all residents without any competition. He made a public assurance to the villagers that he would provide Rs. 51.30 lakh from his own funds for the development of the village. The statement became central to the unanimous decision. Village elders later decided to use this amount to address long-standing local issues. Therefore, the decision to elect him unanimously gained wide support. The village falls under the third phase of the Panchayat elections and residents welcomed the peaceful process.
Meanwhile, several other villages also opted for unanimous elections during the nomination period. Officials earlier announced that the filing of nominations for the first phase ended on Saturday. Nominations were received in large numbers for panchayats and wards across the state. However, some villages avoided electoral contests by finalising candidates through consensus.
In Veldi village of Jangaon district mandal, Singireddy Sunitha Srinivas Reddy was unanimously elected as sarpanch. She was the only candidate to file a nomination in the village. Therefore, she was declared elected without any opposition. She expressed gratitude to the youth, women and all villagers who supported her candidature and helped maintain unity in the village.
The trend of unanimous elections continues to grow in the state as more villages aim to avoid conflict and reduce campaign pressure. The decisions taken in these villages highlight themes of cooperation, financial pledges and community agreement during the ongoing Panchayat election process.
