Hathras Stampede Incident

What happened? On Wednesday, the death toll rose from 116 to 121. As many as 116 people were killed, and several others injured, in a stampede that happened during a satsang hosted by a local preacher Narayan Sakar Vishwa Hari aka Bhole Baba on Tuesday. A preliminary probe indicated several factors that led to the incident – thousands more than expected turned up at the event, many falling on the uneven surface while trying to collect soil the preacher had walked on before he left the venue; and healthcare facilities struggling to keep pace with the rush of dead and injured.

Who is ‘Bhole Baba’, the preacher? Bhole Baba is a self-styled preacher and before he adopted the name and role, he was Suraj Pal Singh, a constable with Uttar Pradesh police. Sources said Singh, 58, hails from a Dalit family in Bahadur Nagar village of Kasganj district, about 65 km from Hathras where the stampede occurred.
