Uttam Kumar Reddy Switches On Devadula Phase-III Pumping Station, Promises Water Security To Over 5 Lakh Acres
Warangal: Irrigation Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday switched on the Phase-III pumping station of the Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme at Devannapet in Warangal district, marking a major milestone in the state’s efforts to ensure sustainable irrigation and drinking water supply across key constituencies.
Accompanied by Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, MLAs Kadiyam Srihari, K. Nagaraju, and Yashaswini Reddy, the Minister later visited the Dharmasagar Reservoir and addressed a press conference, where he reiterated the Congress government’s commitment to the full completion of the Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme, covering all three phases.
“The successful commissioning of Phase-III pumping station is a decisive step towards protecting standing crops, securing the ayacut, and meeting drinking water needs in Telangana,” Uttam Kumar Reddy said. “We will not rest until every drop promised under Devadula reaches the fields and homes it was meant for.”
He revealed that a high-level delegation, including himself and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had recently met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in Delhi to seek central assistance and funding for completing the remaining works. He blamed the previous BRS regime for incomplete documentation, which had delayed approvals and the pace of execution. “The previous government abandoned this project in files and neglected the farmers in reality,” he charged.
The Devannapet Pump House, a critical element of Phase-III, stands out for its engineering scale. With a total depth of 144.50 meters and outer diameter of 25.50 meters, the pump house is equipped with three 31 MW synchronous motors operating at 11 KV and 1740 Amps. Each vertical Francis-type pump discharges 16.64 cumecs (584 cusecs), enabling a total discharge of 49.92 cumecs (1752 cusecs). Water is lifted from the Godavari River via the Sammakka-Sarakka Barrage, with 1 TMC routed through Phase-III from Ramappa Tank, in addition to the 1 TMC already supplied to Dharmasagar via earlier phases.
The Dharmasagar Reservoir – the central balancing point – now serves a total ayacut of 5,22,522 acres. Of this, 1,76,493 acres fall under the reservoir’s direct command:
– North Main Canal: 17,545 acres, benefiting Station Ghanpur and Husnabad constituencies
– South Main Canal: 1,58,948 acres, serving Station Ghanpur, Warangal West, Wardhannapet, and Parkal constituencies
– Beyond Dharmasagar: 3,46,029 acres, fed via Bommakur, Tapaspally, Gandiramaram, and Ashwaraopally reservoirs
The scheme also includes crucial drinking water components. Under Phase-III, 7.5 Mcft/day of drinking water will be supplied to Warangal city and 0.40 Mcft/day to Jangaon Municipality for 130 days, significantly easing urban water stress.
The minister underlined the scheme’s importance for constituencies such as Warangal, Station Ghanpur, Jangaon, Palakurthy, and Bhupalpally. He added that an action plan has been finalised to complete all pending infrastructure, including the commissioning of the Rajavaram Pump House. “Our top priority is to ensure timely irrigation water supply and prevent distress for farmers,” he said.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy also slammed the previous BRS government, claiming it had neglected the Devadula project for a decade. “Only Phase-I was completed during Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s regime. The remaining phases were pushed into bureaucratic limbo,” he said. The ministers also highlighted that Phase-III safeguards a stressed ayacut of 9,820 acres in Cheriyal, Komuravelli, Bachannapet, Gundala, and Devaruppula mandals – where water scarcity had threatened farming livelihoods year after year.
