- Andhra Pradesh issues Vedanta Limited NOC for Krishna drilling
- Conditions set for onshore oil gas wells under DSF Policy
The Andhra Pradesh government has issued a conditional No Objection Certificate to Vedanta Limited for drilling 20 onshore oil and gas wells in Krishna district. The approval was granted to the Cairn Oil and Gas Division of Vedanta Limited, following a formal review by the state authorities, according to an official government order issued on December 26.
As per the order, Vedanta Limited submitted a representation stating that it was awarded the work for development of an onshore oil and gas field under the Discovered Small Field Policy, 2018. The company sought permission to drill wells at 35 locations within a block spread across various village limits. This request was placed before the Water Resources Department because the Bandar Canal passes through the centre of the proposed drilling block.
“After careful examination of the matter, the government hereby issues ‘No Objection Certificate’ to M/s Vedanta Limited (Cairn Oil & Gas Division), Mumbai, for drilling 20 Nos. of wells at the locations mentioned at para (2) above subject to the terms & conditions as mentioned at para (3) above,” the order said.
The government order also directed senior officials to act on the decision. Accordingly, the Engineer in Chief (Irrigation), Water Resources Department, Vijayawada, the Chief Engineer of the Krishna Delta System, Vijayawada, and the Collector of Krishna district will take necessary action. Therefore, the clearance now moves into the implementation stage, subject to compliance with stated conditions.
However, the order made it clear that the Vedanta Limited NOC is restricted in scope. It stated that the No Objection Certificate is issued only from the irrigation point of view and is purely temporary in nature. The applicant must obtain all required permissions from other concerned departments before starting operations. These permissions must follow existing norms and procedures.
The government also imposed strict restrictions on water usage. It clearly stated that no water shall be drawn from irrigation canal sources such as the Bandar Canal, the Krishna Delta System canal network, drainage networks, ponds, reservoirs, or any other surface water source. These conditions aim to safeguard irrigation infrastructure and water availability in the region.
Cairn Oil and Gas, a division of Vedanta Limited, is India’s largest private oil and gas exploration and production company. According to the information provided, it contributes around a quarter of India’s domestic crude oil production. The company has stated its vision to raise this contribution to 50 per cent through sustainable and responsible practices.
