Hyderabad, Sept. 17: Vice President C P Radhakrishnan said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a key role in integrating princely states with the Indian Union.
Radhakrishnan made the remarks at the 79th Hyderabad Liberation Day celebrations at Secunderabad Parade Ground on Thursday.
He said Patel carried an extraordinary responsibility while India was recovering from Partition and consolidating hundreds of princely states.
The Vice President said Patel laid the foundation for a strong and unified “Ek Bharat”.

Radhakrishnan said the contribution of Patel should be viewed in the wider context of national consolidation.
He said September 17, 1948, marked a decisive chapter in the history of independent India.
According to the Vice President, the erstwhile Hyderabad State was integrated into the Indian Union following the events of September 1948 and Operation Polo.
He said Hyderabad Liberation Day was not only a commemoration of a historic date.
Instead, it serves as a reminder of India’s nation building journey and the values that continue to unite the country.
Radhakrishnan also paid tribute to Ramji Gond, Turrebaz Khan, Komaram Bheem and others who participated in the Hyderabad struggle.
He stressed that national unity must also be supported by equal rights, dignity and opportunity.
The Vice President also visited the War Memorial and laid a wreath for the fallen heroes.
He inspected the parade and witnessed cultural performances during the Hyderabad Liberation Day programme.
