Hyderabad: The Nampally fire accident at a furniture shop on Nampally Station Road plunged the city into deep sorrow on Saturday. Five bodies were recovered from the cellar of the building by staff after a major fire broke out. The bodies of children Praneeth and Akhil, along with Bibi, Imitiaz and Habib, were shifted to the Osmania Hospital mortuary, according to the information available.
The incident occurred at Buchachas Furniture Shop, which operates from a five storey building named Sai Vishwas Chambers. The building stands next to the Hindi Prachar Sabha on Nampally Station Road. A large consignment of furniture arrived from China in a container on Friday night. Staff stored the furniture in two cellars of the building. About 22 people work at the shop, and the cellar also served as living space for some staff members.
Yadayya and Lakshmi work as watchmen at the furniture shop. They live in the cellar with their two children, Praneeth aged 11 and Akhil aged 7. On Saturday, both children stayed back at home instead of going to school. The parents went out for work and told the children to play in the cellar. Later, a fire broke out in the two cellars at around 1 pm, triggering panic in the building.
Meanwhile, staff noticed thick smoke and ran out of the building. Mohammed Imtiaz, aged 27 and a resident of Subhanpura, and Syed Habib, aged 40 and a resident of Shastripuram, worked at the shop. They went inside the cellar to rescue Praneeth, Akhil, and Bibi, a 55 year old elderly woman trapped inside. However, they did not return, raising serious concern.
Therefore, rescue teams from nine departments, including HYDRA, police and fire services, launched a large operation. Thick smoke spread rapidly and hampered rescue efforts. Operations continued through the night and resumed on Sunday morning. Later, teams used a JCB to make a hole in the cellar to reach the trapped area. Goshamahal MLA Raja Singh and Khairatabad DP Shilpavalli inspected the rescue operations at the site as efforts continued.
