Hyderabad, 04 September 2026 (Maxim News): WhatsApp has launched its Bill Payments feature in India, allowing users to find, manage and pay utility bills directly within the messaging app.
The new service is powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and provides access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories.
The bill payment categories include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments and loan repayments, among others.
According to Meta India, the feature is designed to eliminate the need for users to switch between multiple apps for routine bill payments.
“With Bill payments, we’re bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household,” said Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta India.
How to Pay Electricity, Gas and Other Bills on WhatsApp
Users can access the new feature directly from the WhatsApp home screen. The company is gradually rolling it out across India for both Android and iOS users.
To pay a bill on WhatsApp:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon at the top of the home screen.
- Select the bill category and choose the required biller.
- Enter and confirm your account details when prompted.
- Review the bill amount and other details fetched by WhatsApp.
- Select a payment method. WhatsApp supports UPI, debit cards and credit cards.
- Confirm the payment to complete the transaction.
WhatsApp also allows users to view previous payments and upcoming bills. Billers used previously can be accessed from the Payments Home section for faster recurring payments.
The service supports multiple accounts under a single biller, allowing users to manage bills for their home, office or family members through the same provider.
Frequently used bill categories will also appear automatically on the Payments Home screen. Users can select “See All” to browse additional categories.
The company said the feature is being rolled out gradually across India and will become available to more Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
The launch expands WhatsApp’s growing range of digital services in India. Users already rely on the platform for services such as mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings and access to citizen services through government chatbots.
With Bill Payments, WhatsApp is adding another everyday financial task to its expanding payments ecosystem.
