17 Children Fall Ill After Wrong Injection In Nagarjunasagar
- Parents allege antibiotic caused vomiting and diarrhea
- Officials launch inquiry; all children now recovering
Seventeen children in Nagarjunasagar, Nalgonda district, fell ill after reportedly receiving a wrong antibiotic injection at a government hospital. The incident occurred at Kamala Nehru Area Hospital, where the children had been admitted three days earlier with viral fever. Parents from Nagarjunasagar Hill Colony, Pailon Colony, and nearby villages said that the reaction began soon after they were administered the injection.
According to the parents, a nurse on duty gave saline to 17 children around 9 pm on Friday before administering the antibiotic injection. Initially, doctors discharged 12 of them, but within half an hour of returning home, several children began suffering from severe vomiting, diarrhea, and chills. Alarmed by these symptoms, parents rushed eight children back to the hospital overnight. The hospital staff then called the remaining four children for observation. Meanwhile, five other children already under care also began showing similar symptoms, taking the total count to 17 affected.
The children were shifted to the Intensive Care Unit for treatment. Hospital superintendent Dr. Bhanu Prasad reached the facility at midnight and arranged for additional medical assistance. He later confirmed that the children were recovering. DMHO Srinivas and DCH Mathrunayak also visited the hospital to investigate the cause. DCH stated that the antibiotic injection led to dehydration, resulting in stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, which caused the children to fall ill. He added that all the affected children are now stable.
Meanwhile, Additional Collector Narayana Amit announced that a committee would be formed to conduct an inquiry. “An inquiry will be conducted within three days, and action will be taken against those responsible,” he said. The reassuring update that all children are recovering brought relief to their families, though the incident has raised serious concerns over safety standards in government hospitals.
