HEATWAVE: Telangana Records Its Hottest Day Of The Season, Warning Issued In 16 Mandals

As mercury levels continue rising across Telangana, the state Wednesday recorded the hottest day of the season with the highest maximum temperature of 46.4 degrees Celsius reported from Julurpad in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district, according to the state-run Telangana State Development Planning Society.

The TSDPS said districts such as Khammam, Mahabubabad, Suryapet and Nalgonda also reported temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. The prevailing heat conditions are likely to continue till May 29, it added.

Khairatabad, with 41.6 degrees Celsius, recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state capital Hyderabad, followed by Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Qutballapur, Secunderabad and Musheerabad, all of which recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

According to the Hyderabad centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD), low-level north-westerly winds prevail over the state, leading to dry weather. It has forecast dry weather to prevail over the state for the next five days.

K Nagarathna, the director of IMD-Hyderabad, said maximum temperatures would likely hover over 41 degrees Celsius in the northern, eastern and north-eastern districts during the next five days. Given the rising temperatures, the IMD expects heat waves in the coming days.

On Wednesday, the IMD, which has fewer weather observatories in the state than the TSDPS, recorded the highest maximum temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius at Nalgonda, followed by 43.4 degrees Celsius in Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts.

The onset of monsoon over the Kerala coast is expected to be delayed by three days, according to the IMD. The southwest monsoon, which normally sets in over Kerala on June 1, will likely arrive on June 4. As a result, the onset of monsoon in Telangana will surely be delayed further.
