Google News Initiative hosts PollCheck Election Academy 2023 for journalists in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, 8 September 2023: The Google News Initiative India Training Network, in collaboration with DataLEADS and In Old News, organized the first session of PollCheck Election Academy 2023 at St. Mary’s College, Hyderabad. The training successfully concluded, equipping journalists with advanced election reporting skills.

PollCheck Election Academy 2023 is a training series being held in five poll-bound states of Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram to support journalists and newsrooms covering the upcoming elections in India with the tools and skills they need to gather, verify, and tell authoritative and engaging stories. Led by seasoned journalism experts, the series will focus on topics such as Online Verification, Video Storytelling, Digital Safety, YouTube for News, Media Literacy, Data Journalism, among others.

PollCheck 2023 Hyderabad started off with a session on Digital Investigation and Verification by Sudhakar Reddy Uddumula, Editor (Investigation) at the Times of India and a GNI-India Training Network Trainer. Sanshey Biswas and Manon Verchot, Co-Founders of In Old News, delved into Video Storytelling for Elections. They highlighted the significance of mobile journalism in election coverage.

Rakesh Dubbudu, the Founder of Factly, conducted an engaging session on How to Report on Election Data emphasizing the significance of reporting based on data-driven insights.

Ravi Raj, Content Partnerships Manager at YouTube, explored the opportunities of short-form videos for elections during his session on YouTube for News. The concluding session was led by Bharath Guniganti, Data Analyst, Fact Checker, Factly & GNI-India Training Network Trainer on Digital Safety for Journalists.

The day-long workshop was attended by journalists, media educators, fact-checkers, researchers, and data professionals.

GNI India Training Network’s aim is to support journalists and media educators across India in digital training and upscaling opportunities. Led by DataLEADS, the Network has trained thousands of journalists, media educators, fact-checkers and journalism students in more than 15 languages across India.
